One of the best things about moving into an independent assisted living community is the chance to make new friends. Ecclesiastes 4:9 — Working Together

"Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion."

It's a theme throughout Scripture: God didn't create humans to be alone. He created us to live in fellowship with one another, helping each other through the toil and celebrating with each other during successes. He created us to pick each other up when we fall.

John 15:13 — Sacrificing for Each Other

"Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends."

Jesus gave the greatest sacrifice for those he loved — all of us — and we're to continue sacrificing for each other. How do you "lay down your life" for a friend? Today, that might look like putting down a phone or turning off the television to spend a few minutes in genuine conversation with another. It might also look like:

• Choosing to step out of your apartment to engage with people in the community
• Taking time to serve others in whatever way you can, whether that's talking to them, giving them a ride or making a gift or treat for them
• Allowing others to serve you, which can be a sacrifice that's harder to make than many realize

John 15:12 — Loving Each Other

"This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you."

Jesus doesn't mince words when he tells his disciples what they need to do when he's gone. And it's not a gentle suggestion: Jesus commands his disciples to love each other.

That command holds true today — and we think it's especially true when you're part of a community like ViewPointe. By caring for, spending time with and looking out for each other, we can comply with Jesus's command while making great new friends.

So, before you retire quietly to your apartment tonight, consider whether you might want to enjoy some evening outdoor time with a neighbor or a game of cards or Scrabble in a common area. You never know how you'll be able to serve others or be served as you make new friends.
